The pandemic has brought the impending worry of nurse shortages in Canada. This has added increasing pressure on students to obtain licenses and fill the gap. This worry, coupled with how stressful nursing school is already, can be a recipe for disaster.

Instead of giving in to the mass panic, it’s essential to go through nursing school with a clear mindset to reduce burnout chances. Here’s how you can (successfully) survive nursing school!

Get Enough Sleep

A common pattern noticed in students is their lack of sleep and heavy reliance on coffee to get through their academic year. While this may seem like a smart idea in the time being, lack of sleep can be detrimental to your productivity.

Poor sleep is directly linked with an inability to focus. The negative effects it has on your cognitive performance will reflect in your academics, which will turn into a more vicious cycle of losing more sleep to bump your grades. It’s important to get a good night’s rest to ensure you’re ready to take on the day’s challenges.

Develop A Study Habit

From the very first day at nursing school, you need to take a long look at your study habits and ask yourself truthfully if you would benefit from a readjustment. What worked for you in school may not work for you now, and it’s important to fix what you can from the very beginning.

You should analyze what kind of study method works best for you. Are you a visual learner? Do you need a quiet space, or do you work better in a group setting? How much time do you need to bring yourself to focus on a task at hand? Once you have an answer to these questions, you can prepare yourself for any exam or assessment without getting overwhelmed.

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help

A common mistake students make is equating asking for help as a sign of weakness. That’s simply not the case. It’s a great habit to ask questions and seek assistance whenever necessary. It shows that you know the places where you might be lacking and are willing to improve yourself.
